“The law of the Lord is perfect restoring the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean enduring forever; the judgments of the Lord are true they are righteous altogether. They are more desirable then gold, yes much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover by them thy servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward”
Psalm 19:7-11
Dan M. is filling in for Pastor Dan this week.
If you read Psalm 19:7-11 from Wednesday’s devotion you saw six attributes of scripture and how they function the life of believer. Did you notice how those six attributes mirror God’s divine qualities? Those qualities are”perfect, sure, right, pure, clean and true.” It is to be expected that if all scripture is God breathed then the scriptures should reflect the divine qualities of God. In 2nd Timothy 3:17 the “man of God” recognizes the words that are authoritative, being God-breathed, by their divine qualities, how they function in his or her life, and its effectiveness on the lives of believers throughout the history of the church and now. In other words we recognize Scripture by 1. its beauty and 2. its efficacy. 1. The beauty of Scripture. In Psalm 19:1-6, we see the glory of God displayed in what has been made. How much more do we see the glory of God displayed in what He has said? It is the Divine attributes reflected in Scripture that make it “more desirable than gold,” vs10. It is to be sought after and mined. God’s Word is also “sweeter than honey.” The experience of reproof and correction is as pleasurable as the sweetest of substances. Above all, reproof and correction bring “great reward,” vs11. What is that reward? I am reminded of the promise to Abram in Genesis 15 where God says, ” fear not Abram I am thy shield, thy exceedingly great reward.” Our reward is Christ. God’s word is beautiful precisely because that is where we find Christ, Hebrews 11:6. Let us therefore diligently seek the rewarder of our souls.
