“For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.”
Hebrews 4:12-13
Dan M. is filling in for Pastor Dan this week.
Last week we’ve looked at Scripture being effective in the life of a believer. Here I want to look at the efficacy of Scripture in and of itself. We see that Scripture “is living…” vs 12. It is not dead. “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the Word of our God stands forever,” Isaiah 40:8. It does not out-date. It does not loose relevance. It speaks to the souls of people across all time and across all boundaries. It is the source of our rebirth and growth, 1Peter 1.23-25. Scripture is “…active.” Isaiah 55:11, “So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” The Word is active because of the intention of the One who sent it. The activity of the word of God is “sharper than any two-edged sword and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit of both joints and Marrow and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” The word of God is able to discern between seemingly Indiscernible things such as soul and spirit or joints and marrow. We could fool ourselves with our thoughts convincing ourselves that our intentions are good, but the word of God cuts through all of that “to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” If we think that we can escape this activity, we are mistaken for verse 13 says, “and there is no creature hidden from his sight but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of him with whom we have to do.” The word of God is a surgical instrument in His hand in order to lay bare the hearts of people for judgement. Therefore we cannot divest the Word of God from the One who inspired it. We cannot stand in judgement over the Word picking and choosing which words to follow and which to disregard. When we do that we are standing in judgement over God. That will not do “in the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.” As believers we are to go to the word in order to have God cut out the sin in our hearts, Psalm 119:11. This is something only a living Word can do. This is proven over thousands of years of people being changed by God’s living and active Word! Oh what a powerful resource we have at our fingertips! I urge you brethren to go to it and spend time with God in it to find rebirth and growth in the Spirit of the Living God.
