Daily Devotion With Pastor Dan – September 30th, 2020
O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth,
Who have set Your glory above the heavens! 2 Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, because of Your enemies, that You may silence the enemy and the avenger. 3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, 4 what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him? 5 For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, 7 all sheep and oxen – even the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea that pass through the paths of the seas. 9 O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth!…..(Psalm 8)
Notice, this Psalm begins and ends with God. It is a hymn of praise to God who has redeemed us and rules over us. It is a burst of praise for who God is and what He thinks of you and me. God is infinitely above you and I.
He is…..Lord of heaven and earth (Acts 17:24), the Creator of all things (Genesis 1:1) (Genesis 1:24-28). He is…..Omnipotent, Omniscient, Omnipresent, so we cannot flee from His power, His knowledge, or His presence at any time. It is true that from the womb and throughout life He is there. We cannot hide from Him, He fills heaven and earth. Just His excellent name is over all His creation. That is absolutely amazing! The word excellent (Majestic) in the Hebrew language tells us that God is the Incomparable, Omnipotent God. He is majestic, in power, in splendor, in glory, in works, in holiness, and there is no god like the Lord God Almighty. He is our LORD (our Redeemer), and our Lord (our Sovereign – our Ruler). Oh, that we would praise Him every day!
What does the Word of God tell us about the name of our God?
- He is “LORD God” – (Genesis 2:4)
- He is “Most High God” – (Genesis 14:18-22)
- He is “Everlasting God” – (Genesis 21:33)
- He is “I AM” – (Exodus 3:14)
- He is “King Eternal” – (1 Timothy 1:17)
To Him belongs the name far above any other (Psalm 148:13). To Him belongs the name far above any other (Psalm 148:13) (Philippians 2:9-11)(Psalm 113:1-6). The universe reveals God’s greatness even how excellent (majestic) is His name in all the earth (Psalm 19:1-6) (Psalm 33:4-9) (Romans 1:20). All of this, David said, was “the work of God’s fingers” (8:3). As awesome as God’s (name – creation) are, He has still concerned Himself with man, with you, with me. May He be exalted with our lips, and by our life!
