(Psalm 89:30-37)…..30 “If his sons forsake My law and do not walk in My judgments,
31 If they break My statutes
And do not keep My commandments, 32 Then I will punish their transgression with the rod,
and their iniquity with stripes. 33 Nevertheless My lovingkindness I will not utterly take from him,
Nor allow My faithfulness to fail. 34 My covenant I will not break, nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips. 35 Once I have sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David: 36 His seed shall endure forever, and his throne as the sun before Me; 37 It shall be established forever like the moon, even like the faithful witness in the sky.” Selah
The Psalmist has declared to us the promises that God had made to David as king, and two of these being found in – (89:24) and (89:28). So sound are these promises, that the LORD will never change His mind concerning them. Think about that for a moment of just how powerful that is. Even if the son’s of David (his linage who would be on the throne) would forsake the laws of God, and not walk in His judgments, even if they break His statutes and don’t keep His commandments, that would not be enough for God to break His covenant with David (2 Samuel 7:12-17).
This is what the Psalmist wants to remind God of, that God would remember that He promised to keep His covenant with David. Of course we know that in the lifetime of Solomon, David’s kingdom was split into ten northern tribes, and two southern tribes, due to the very things God warned against, and many troubles came upon God’s land due to disobedience (1 Kings 11:6) (1 Kings 11:31,39). Yet with all of the forsaking of God’s law, and the people not walking in His judgments, and with all the breaking of God’s statutes and not keeping His commandments, God remained faithful to His covenant with David. Yes He disciplines (Proverbs 3:11-12), but notice again (89:33). His lovingkindness is not taken away, and His faithfulness does not fail. As much as that would be a reason for David to give praise to God, how about you? What does the knowledge of the lovingkindness and faithfulness of God do to your walk with God?
Praise! Praise! Praise! God that His love and faithfulness is not removed from us today (Deuteronomy 7:9) (1 Kings 8:56) (Psalm 36:5) (Psalm 89:1) (Psalm 119:138) (1 Corinthians 1:9). Praise God He is faithful! Always! Praise the LORD that man’s (our) unfaithfulness cannot make void the faithfulness of God (2 Timothy 2:13). Oh, shout for joy over that truth this morning. That truth should make the most depressed this morning shout for joy! Notice – what God says about the covenant that He made with David (89:34-37). God will not break any covenant that He makes. He does not alter the word that goes out from His lips at any time. There is an abundance of hope and confidence in that promise.
The seed of David was not allowed to fail, but was to continue on until, in the fulness of time, there was to be born into the world David’s Seed (Jesus) Who would ultimately fulfill the covenant promise by having His throne forever. How wonderful is it that with God there is no variation or shadow of turning (James 1:17). He is not like us humans we make our promises and we cannot always stand behind them, but what He says He will do because He cannot lie (Numbers 23:19) (Hebrews 6:13-20). Oh, give God praise today because He is faithful, always.
