(Colossians 2:1-3)…..For I want you to know what a great conflict I have for you and those in Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh, 2 that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
These treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in the Father and Christ. How amazing is that? This means one is going to have to know the Father and Christ for those treasures to be found. Do you know Him (1 John 2:3-6) (2 Timothy 1:12)? There is the question for the ages?
This morning I want to speak to the first treasure that is hidden in the Father and in Christ, “wisdom.” We know that God had given Solomon great wisdom, and that the book of Proverbs was written for the purpose of imparting wisdom to those who don’t have it. It is, therefore, a treasure trove of wisdom, containing answers for every part of life (Proverbs 1:1-6). But, what is wisdom? It is the practical application of knowledge in difficult, demanding, or delicate situations. But what does the Bible have to say about wisdom?
We Need Wisdom
Why do we need wisdom? One reason is so that we won’t be a foolish person. Reading through the book of Proverbs we can see that the fool is repeatedly condemned (Proverbs 9:6) (Proverbs 26:3). Beyond that we need wisdom to get along in the world (Colossians 4:5) (Matthew 10:16) (Psalm 90:12) (Proverbs 8:12-21). Wisdom should be desired above all earthly things
The Father And The Son Are The Source Of Wisdom
Our text today reveals that wisdom is hidden in God the Father and Christ. If wisdom is what you desire, you must get it from our Lord. For God is the source of all wisdom (Job 38:36). Sure, Solomon was given wisdom miraculously (1 Kings 4:29), and James discusses asking God for wisdom (James 1:5), but God by all accounts is wisdom in Himself. And where is it that we have access to His wisdom? Perhaps the greatest source of wisdom we have today is God’s word (Proverbs 1:1-2) (2 Timothy 3:15) (2 Peter 3:15-16) (1 Corinthians 2:6-7).
The Character Of Wisdom
We ought to be wise in things that are good (Romans 16:19). We ought to be wise in our conduct (James 3:13-17) (Proverbs 8:32-36). For it is wisdom that…….
- Gives us happiness – (Proverbs 3:15)
- Keeps us from evil – (Proverbs 5:1-6)
- Has great value – (Proverbs 8:11) (Proverbs 16:16) (Proverbs 4:7)
- Should be acquired – (Proverbs 23:23)
