Why Would We Want To Sing

Posted on February 1, 2021February 1, 2021

When we come before our Lord to worship Him we might be filled with any number of thoughts and emotions, things like thankfulness, gratitude, appreciation, unworthiness, excitement, etc. Now worship is defined as giving reverent honor, giving homage, to adore or to regard someone or something. But worship is more than that, at least it should be for the Christian. It is to have extreme love for someone or something. For the purpose of our devotion today let’s address singing praises to God, and in doing so having an extreme love for Him that comes through our voices and our music.

Singing praises is one way for God’s people to declare their love for God. Consider the attitude of David the sweet singer of Israel (Psalm 92:1-4) (Psalm 96:1-6) (Psalm 101:1) (Psalm 113:1-6) (Psalm 146:1-2) (Psalm 147:1-6) (Psalm 149:1-4). David was a man after God’s own heart, shouldn’t we be also?

But why praise God? Now there are many ways to answer that question, but one of the main reasons is because He alone is King over all things. No matter what man thinks of God today, He is King, He is in charge, He alone is LORD (Exodus 15:17- 18) (2 Chronicles 20:1-6) (Psalm22:28) (Psalm 95:1-3) (1 Timothy 1:17) (1 Timothy 6:15). The LORD is in control of all things and He reigns over the nations because He is Sovereign (Job 38-39). Just think for a moment of just how Sovereign the LORD is (Proverbs 16:9) (Proverbs 21:1) (Isaiah 40:23) (Isaiah 44: 24-28), certainly these are reasons to sing praises to Him.

We must also engage our heart when we sing. When we sing, we must do so with grace in our hearts, making melody in your heart before Him. This assumes that we involve our EMOTIONS as we sing! To sing without emotion (without grace in our hearts) (without melody in your heart) will be evident in our countenance (Proverbs 15:13).

Why is it important to worship God? Because we need to spend time with God. God wants some of your time. It blesses God and He loves it. He loves us and wants intimacy with us. If for any other reason He is worthy! So today lift up a merry heart to the LORD and praise Him with all that is in you.
