The apostle John see’s the One who has a garment down to His feet, likened to the garment of the priest. This is very fitting since Jesus is our High Priest in heaven. He is with the golden band (sash or ephod) around His chest (Exodus 39:1-5), but with Jesus He has more than just a few strands of gold woven into it, His is solid gold. Of course it is because His priesthood must be more glorious than any others. One of the duties the priest’s was to tend to the golden lamp stands in the temple every day so that they would stay burning before the Lord, isn’t it amazing that that is exactly where we see our Lord? He is nt the midst of the lamp stands as our High Priest making sure His church stays lit.
Oh to see His glory, His holiness, His divine nature as John did looking at His head and hair. A brilliant and intense white. And to have those eyes of His, bright, sharp, and penetrating right through those who would be in His presence, revealing His omnipresence, His divine knowledge of each of us. Just soak that in for a moment! Imagine what John was looking at as he scanned downed to the Lord’s feet that looked like fine brass. In the Greek that word is derived from “brass” and “frankincense,” and in the Hebrew it means “whiten.” Brass which is in the furnace will eventually reach a place of white heat. Consider for a moment that God’s alter with the tabernacle and with the temple was overlaid with bronze (Exodus 38:1-7), so it might be what is meant by the description of our Lord’s feet is that He is portraying Himself as being prepared for divine judgment, even here as He judges the church.
In any case, it is Jesus in all His glory who has the voice of authority, the voice that sounds like many waters. It is a voice that no enemy of His will be able to stand in defiance to. A sound that proceeds from His mouth as a two-edged sword (Ezekiel 43:2) (Daniel 10:6) (Hebrews 4:12) (Revelation 2:16) (Revelation 19:15). What a magnificant sight it must have been for John to look at the radiance of the Lord, and then do the only thing he or any of us could do, to fall at His feet as a dead person.
Now, you are probably wondering why I am bringing up the same thought as yesterdays devotion. Well, I was thinking just what will men and women do when they come face to face with the LORD of all. Are you ready to face Him if today was the day you were called to stand before Him and give an account for your life? Let me just say, “Today is the day to come to Jesus Christ by faith, repenting of a life that you and I have spent in sin and unbelief towards Him. I hope you (whoever is reading this) recognize that there is a glorious God, LORD, Lord who we must stand before.
