(Revelation 2:8-11)…..8 “And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write,‘These things says the First and the Last, who was dead, and came to life: 9 “I know your works, tribulation, and poverty (but you are rich); and I know the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 10 Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. 11 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.” ’
Smyrna is known today as “Izmir,” which is in modern day Turkey. This city was an important sea-port for the Roman kingdom, and was located forty miles north of Ephesus. It was known for its wealth, which was a direct result of their science and and medical education. Smyrna means “Myrrh,” an ointment used for burial, which was produced there. This city was intensely loyal to Rome which found its place in emperor worship. A disciple of “John Polycarp,” the bishop of Smyrna,” was burned at the stake here in 156 AD for refusing to for refusing to worship the Roman emperor.
Jesus says, “I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich), and the blasphemy by those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of satan. It was this church that was recognized for their endurance of persecution, extreme poverty, and suffering from slander. Being aware of their persecution (presumably by other cults), Jesus Christ commends them for unwavering faithfulness. Would that not be a great thing to be praised by our Lord for? Aware of the slander against them by ethnic Jews, Jesus makes it known that some are not real Jews, and therefore their suffering is ultimately from satan.
Notice, Jesus’ description of Himself. He is the first and the last, who was dead, and has come to life. His sovereignty and His eternity comes into view in this description of Himself
What is the promise to believer’s that we see here? He who overcomes will not be hurt by the second death (2:11) (Revelation 20:11-15). This is a great promise from the One who suffered, conquered death, and came back to life. He promises to those who are faithful until death is the “Crown of Life”
Is that a crown that you want? Then be faithful until death.
