The words that we speak really do reveal what is in our heart. Out of the abundance of the heart -the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:33-37). Notice – it is a result of the treasure stored in our heart (Matthew 12:35). Consider for a moment what your words reveal about you? Our words can sometimes hurt other peopleLying and flattery can be destructive – (Proverbs 26:28)
Gossip creates strife and can destroys friendships (Proverbs 16:27-28) (Proverbs 17:9). Neighborly relations can be destroyed(Proverbs 11:9).
Instead, we can use our words to bless others, by cooling down heated conversations (Proverbs 15:1). By comforting the anxious (Proverbs 12:25). By offering grace to the hearers (Ephesians 4:29) (Colossians 4:6). Do our words impart grace to the hearers?
3. Steps To Better Words
The potential for doing much harm with our words should encourage us to take our speech seriously. With that in mind we should…..
- Give attention to the Fathers words (Proverbs 4:20-27).
- Guard our lips (mouth) (Proverbs 21:23).
- Lay aside evil speaking (1 Peter 2:1-3) (Psalm 59:12) (Ephesians 4:31-32)(1 Peter 3:10-11) (Ephesians 4:29) (Colossians 3:8) (Proverbs 4:24)
We need to be careful that our tongue is not used to lead us into sin. Let’s not use it to criticize or harm others, or not use it in complaining around or to others, Let’s not use it to blame or criticize God for what is happening around us! Instead, let us speak in ways that show our love for our Lord.
