(Matthew 24:37-39)…..But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 38 For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark,39 and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. Jesus presses His second coming by comparing it to the days of Noah. The last days will be like the days when Noah built the ark and the world was destroyed by the flood, to see the state of affairs in Noah’s day we need to look at (Genesis 6:5-13).
(Genesis 6:5-13)…..Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7 So the Lord said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.
We can see that the days when Noah lived were days filled with wickedness and violence. Men lived for evil and gave no thought to God or His will. These fit the description of the Godless in (Psalm 53:1-3)…..The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and have done abominable iniquity; There is none who does good. 2 God looks down from heaven upon the children of men, To see if there are any who understand, who seek God. 3 Every one of them has turned aside; They have together become corrupt; There is none who does good, No, not one.
But also, that life will be going on as usual. Men will eat, drink, and marry just as they have always done. Life will continue to go on in ordinary fashion to the end. The word “imagination” (Genesis 6:5) means, conception, purpose, work, a thing framed, intent to fashion as a potter, it means that men fashioned every form of evil and gave themselves over to every vile affection of the flesh. They were so wicked and so given over the pursuing the evils of sin that God was determined to destroy them from the face of the earth. The sin of man grieves God (Genesis 6:6). Can God be grieved by our sin? – YES! (Psalm 78:40) (Isaiah 63:9-10) (Ephesians 4:30)
Think about the fact that we are living in days when the abortion industry has murdered 1,370,000 babies in the name of convenience and a woman’s right to choose. That is over 3,753 babies murdered per day in the USA. World wide there have been nearly 1 billion abortions since records began being kept. Add to these horrors the ungodly perversions of sexual sin in our culture, in a culture where a mere 1% of our population desires to establish a sinful lifestyle as being legitimate before God and man, all at the same time when God’s Word calls it an abomination – (Leviticus 18:22)
We haven’t even discussed the tragedies of all the sins of the flesh listed in (Galatians 5:19-21), which if practiced will destroy lives by the millions. I think it is easy to see that we are living in days like those in which Noah lived. Truly, “the wickedness of man is great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart is only evil continually.” Yet, the people were warned by Noah for 120 years, preaching about the coming judgment, but the people just ignored his warnings (2 Peter 2:4-8). While Noah preached, the people partied! They ignored all the warning signs and they paid an eternal price for doing so (24:39). This reminds us that they know until until it was too late. As we watch the end approaching, we too are living in the midst of complacent people. God is still warning people to flee the wrath to come, but people are refusing to heed the warnings. Are You? Why? Probably for the same reasons, because people have plenty, they are entertained, many do not see their need of a Savior, many feel that they are generally good, but they are not (Romans 3:10-18)…..“There is none righteous, no, not one;11 There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. 12 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.” 13 “Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit”; “The poison of asps is under their lips”; 14 “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.” 15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways; 17 And the way of peace they have not known.” 18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
They hear the Gospel and are warned to avoid Hell – but they do not see a reason to change their lives and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. They have been blinded by Satan and see no need to change(2 Corinthians 4:3-4)…..But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. We are living in a day of spiritual complacency and moral apathy. People have great spiritual needs but they cannot see them and most don’t care. For most, life is about fun, entertainment and the quest for spiritual things is next to none. People are refusing to heed the warning signs of Christ’s coming – they will be condemned forever! Jesus tells us that His coming will be just like that of the days of Noah.
