(Psalm 76:4-12)…..4 You are more glorious and excellent Than the mountains of prey. 5 The stouthearted were plundered; They have sunk into their sleep; And none of the mighty men have found the use of their hands. 6 At Your rebuke, O God of Jacob, Both the chariot and horse were cast into a dead sleep. 7 You, Yourself, are to be feared; And who may stand in Your presence When once You are angry? 8 You caused judgment to be heard from heaven; The earth feared and was still, 9 When God arose to judgment, To deliver all the oppressed of the earth. Selah 10 Surely the wrath of man shall praise You; With the remainder of wrath You shall gird Yourself. 11 Make vows to the Lord your God, and pay them; Let all who are around Him bring presents to Him who ought to be feared. 12 He shall cut off the spirit of princes; He is awesome to the kings of the earth. is glorious and excellent (majestic) above all things even the mountains of prey
God you are more illustrious and excellent than all the mountains of prey, where wild beasts wander and prey on those that are more helpless than themselves. This is thought to be in reference to Assyria the stouthearted, which means, bold, courageous, fearless, gallant, gutsy, heroic in their persecution of Israel . Never-the-less, think of the majesty of God compared even to the most powerful nations (Isaiah 6:1-5) (Isaiah 2:2,19,21) (Psalm 29:4) (Psalm 93:1-2). Do you see Him as Majestic? Against such majesty, God’s enemies cannot stand (76:4-6). Think about that for a minute…..why worry about the way the world is going, our God is Majestic and in charge.
Read: The Song of Moses – (Exodus 15:1-21)
Who can stand in the presence of such a glorious and excellent God if should become angry (76:7). The fact that God is the judge should terrify mankind, for the Lord God is a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:25-29). He is a devouring force against evil because He hates it (Proverbs 6:16-19). He will punish evil (Hebrews 10:26-31).
We Must Fear Him (Luke 12:5), because He is the God of wrath. That may be unpopular, but that doesn’t change the truth of it (Nahum 1:2-3). Traits of God’s Wrath Include…….
- It’s reserved for His enemies – (Romans 1:18)
- For those who reject God/His word – (Hebrews 3:7-11)
- It’s Just and righteous – (Romans 2:5)
- It’s applied without partiality – (Romans 2:6-11)
This morning give the Lord praise because He is The God of Majesty, and you are not His enemy if you have believed His gospel.
