Jesus was no ordinary baby (Matthew 1:18-25). His name is Jesus, a very common Jewish name, often given in memory of Joshua. Jesus (Joshua) means God is Savior. The son of Mary was rightfully called that because – “He will save His people from their sins” (v.21). The question is, How would He do this? By offering His blood as the atonement for our sins (Romans 5:8-9). When one’s sin’s are washed away by the blood of Jesus, Jesus is then their Savior. The believer is set free from the power of sin (Romans 8:1-2) (Romans 8:12-14). The believer is set free from the punishment of sin (Romans 5:9) (1 Thessalonians 1:9-10).
Ultimately the believer is set free from the presence of sin (Revelation 7:13-17). How important is this name that God has revealed to us. His Name Is Immanuel – (Isaiah 7:14) (Matthew 1:23). literally means “God is with us” He is – Mighty God – Everlasting Father – (Isaiah 9:6). He is “God” – possessing the “glory of God” (John 1:1-3;14) (John 8:58) (John 10:25-30) (John 14:6-9) (Philippians 2:5-11).
Human minds – finite and feeble – wrestle with this great mystery, but Jesus is “God manifested in the flesh” (1 Timothy 3:16). He came to defeat evil
- That was His sole mission – (John 18:36-37) (Hebrews 2:13-18)
- Our promised Lord came to deliver humanity from the sin into which it had just fallen
- He was came to do for mankind what they could never do for themselves
- He came to secure their liberty and salvation from sin
- He came to die for the sins of humanity (Luke 19:1-10)
