(Proverbs 1:7)…..”The fear of the Lord” is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. The “fear of the Lord” will cause one to hate evil – (Proverbs 8:13). The “fear of the Lord” will prolong life – (Proverbs 10:27). The “fear of the Lord” provides strong confidence and is a fountain of life – (Proverbs 14:26-27). The “fear of the Lord” prompts one to depart from evil – (Proverbs 16:6). The “fear of the Lord” leads to a satisfying life, and spares one from much evil – (Proverbs 19:23). The “fear of the Lord” is the way to riches, honor, and life – (Proverbs 22:4). When we look at these Scriptures one might begin to think that God wants His people to fear Him. Actually that is a no brainer, that is exactly what He wants.
Without the fear of the LORD in the life of a saint (that is – the believer – the Christian)…..
- We are closed off to the treasures of God’s wisdom and knowledge!
- We will flirt with evil and be corrupted by it!
- Our lives are likely to be shortened by our refusal to heed God’s word!
- We will not come to know the love of God that gives us assurance and confidence of our salvation!
- When fallen into sin, we will not be motivated to repent and turn to God!
- We are lost from finding the way of life!
Without the fear of the Lord – we cannot please God – (Isaiah 66:1-2). This is such a sad case, not that we are trying to please Him to gain salvation or privilege, but to show our love towards Him. But that can’t happen (pleasing Him) unless there is first fear of Him and His word.
Do you realize where you were – (Romans 3:18), now realize what He has done for you. Notice David’s invitation in – (34:11)….Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
Who is the man who desires life, and love many days, that he may see good (see the goodness of God)?
- He keeps his tongue from evil
- He keeps his lips from speaking deceit (lying)
- He departs from evil (wickedness) and does good (righteous acts)
- He seeks peace and pursues it
- Is this who we are? Am I one who fears the LORD in such a way as this?
- Read: (Psalm 15:1-5)
f. This is the one that the eyes of the LORD are upon – these are the righteous – (Psalm 33:18)
- His ears are open to their cry (their prayer) – (34:15, 17) (Psalm 145:17-20)
- He is near to the humble (broken heart – contrite spirit) – (Psalm 51:17) (Isaiah 57:15)
- These are the character traits of the one who fears the LORD
- Is this us? – May it be!
