How blessed is the man that walketh not in the council of the ungodly. Walketh (walks) speaks of one’s lifestyle, whoever this person is he/she is blessed if he is not walking as a habit of life in the council of the ungodly. Who are the ungodly (wicked). They look for evil – (Proverbs 16:27). They want to distort the grace and existence of God – (Jude 3-4). What is the council of the ungodly? The word council means the advice or the purposes of those who are hostile to God. With all the advice that comes to us from so many different sources, and so many don’t even consider if the counsel they get is godly or ungodly. The righteous man knows where to find completely godly counsel (Psalm 119:24)
Nor standeth (stands) in the way of sinners. What does this mean? The word “standeth” means – to take one’s position with – the idea of applying the advice of ungodly council to one’s own behavior (2 Corinthians 6:11-18).
Nor sitteth (sits) in the seat of the scornful. First comes the danger of listening to the ungodly then talking the side of the sinner then sitting in the company of the scornful, the mockers of God. You will either be the object of their mockery or you will sit with them in the seat of the scornful, the scornful despise the revealed will of God and scorn those who do His will as well as the authority of His Word.
A person cannot be blessed at all who willfully violates God’s truth while getting advice and walking in that advice from those, who by nature, hate God. But, blessed is the man/woman who does not walk in the state of mind which the ungodly cherish, that scoffs at the very worship of God.
The Christian’s Delight – (1:2-3)
But his delight [is] in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. Delight is translated – longing – good pleasure – that in which one takes delight in. And what is that delight? – It is the law of the Lord – it is the word of God – it is the holy scriptures – it is superior to all man’s worldly wisdom (Psalm 112:1) (Psalm 119:41-48) (1 Corinthians 3:18-23).
What will be the evidence that a man or woman truly delights in the word of God? In his law doth he meditate day and night. Meditates – indicates that this meditation is ongoing – we can never learn enough – apply enough – study enough – listen enough – teach enough – preach enough – meditate enough – to the point where you have arrived. Second – true delight is seen in the quantity of time spent with the word of God (Joshua 1:8) (Psalm 63:1-8). A proper delight and meditation of God’s truth will produce steadfastness and fruitfulness – notice – (1:3). The tree is the worshipper – the water is the word of God which brings nourishment – producing fruit in its season – he will prosper in whatever he does.
