Read: (106:6-43)
The Psalmist considers his own generation together with the fathers of old and regards their sin done as being just like their fathers sin (Ezra 9:6-15) (Daniel 9:4-19). This Psalm references 8 distinguishable sins by the people of Israel
- Rebellion – (106:6-12) – in Egypt – (Exodus 14:10-14; 15-17) – Lie: God can’t save us from our current situation
- Discontent – (106:13-15) – in the desert – (Exodus 16) (Numbers 11) – Lie: God will not provide what we need – what God has provided is not enough
- Jealousy – (106:16-18) – in the desert – (Numbers 16) – Lie: God cares about other people more than he does me
- Idolatry – (106:19-23) – in the desert – (Exodus 32) – Lie: God is distant and unconcerned
- Unbelief – (106:24-27) – in the desert – (Numbers 13-14) – Lie: God is not powerful enough to help us overcome big and threatening obstacles
- Apostasy (106:28-31) – in the desert – (Numbers 25) – Lie: God’s way of life is not satisfying
- Insurrection – (106:32-33) – in the desert – (Numbers 20) – God is still not enough
- Accommodation – (106:34-39) – in the Promised Land – (Exodus 34:11-14) (Numbers 33:50-56) (2 Kings 16:3) (Jeremiah 7:30-31) – Lie: God’s word doesn’t need to be fully obeyed
When we think about the history of Israel’s sins, we would miss the point if we did not examine ourselves and ask, “Lord, am I guilty of any of these things?” These accounts in (Psalm 106) can teach us a few things about sin, such as sin begins with a lie believed to be true. The effects of sin are far reaching, such as sin separates man from God…..(Isaiah 59:1-2)…..“Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.”
We are told in Scripture that all have sinned (Romans 3:23) (1 John 1:8-10). All are deserving of death (Romans 6:23). Man needs redemption and we cannot find redemption through riches (Psalm 49:6-7). We cannot find redemption through the blood of animal sacrifices (Hebrews10:4). We cannot find redemption through our own works (Ephesians 2:9). And we cannot find redemption of our own devising and invention (Jeremiah 10:23).
Christ came to redeem man with His blood sacrifice. Redemption therefore is “in Christ” (Romans 3:24)…..“Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”
(Titus 2:14)…..“Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.”
(Hebrews 9:12)…..“Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.”
(1 Peter 1:18) – “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.”
