The gospel of Jesus Christ answers the problem of sin by commanding us to “repent” (Acts 3:19) (Acts 17:30-31). When a person truly repents of their sin, they will not practice it anymore. But what is repentance? There are misconceptions about repentance. That repentance is sorrow for my sin, but there doesn’t need to be a change or that repentance is a changed life, but there doesn’t need to be sorrow. What does the Bible say about repentance? The answer can be seen in (2 Corinthians 7:9-10).
The Greek word is metanoeo (meta = change – noeo = thought or mind). So repentance then signifies to change one’s mind or purpose. This change of mind involves both a turning from sin and a turning to God. Notice, Scripture says, “Godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation.” Not simply “sorrow,” but one that is “godly sorrow.” Worldly sorrow is a selfish kind of sorrow, sorry because he got caught, sorry because it makes you look bad to others. Godly sorrow is sorrow directed toward GOD where one is sorry because their actions are sins against a Holy God. This is the attitude of David in (Psalm 51:4)
Unless the problem of sin is adequately addressed…man will die in his sin – (Romans 6:23). The good news is Jesus offers freedom from sin – wrath – and death….
- Through His blood – (Ephesians 1:7)
- Through faith in Him – (Romans 10:9-10)
May you realize one of two things today…….
- If you have put your faith in Jesus Christ – and received from Him forgiveness of your sin – then give Him praise for delivering you from what would have been certain death
- If you are still in the class of the wicked – you are without Christ – in danger of His judgment – today is your chance to repent and come to Christ
