(Psalm 34:8-16)…..Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! 9 Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him. 10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger; But those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing. 11 Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. 12 Who is the man who desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good? 13 Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit. 14 Depart from evil and do good; Seek peace and pursue it. 15 The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry. 16 The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
Notice in this Psalm who it is who is to fear the LORD. His “saints.” Who are these saints? Saints are simply the sanctified, set apart believer in Jesus Christ. A saint is not someone who does some miracle on earth and then is voted on to be a saint after they are dead. According to Scripture a saint is Christian. Anyway it is the saints who are to fear the Lord.
Let me give the definition for fear (YIR’AH) used in the Scriptures
- Dread – Terror
- To stand in awe
- Revere – Respect
It would also carry the thought of trembling and quaking at the thought of offending God in any way (Philippians 2:12-13). The importance of fearing the LORD is seen in the book of Proverbs
- The “fear of the Lord” is the beginning of knowledge – (Proverbs 1:7)
- The “fear of the Lord” will cause one to hate evil – (Proverbs 8:13)
- The “fear of the Lord” will prolong life – (Proverbs 10:27)
- The “fear of the Lord” provides strong confidence and is a fountain of life – (Proverbs 14:26-27)
- The “fear of the Lord” prompts one to depart from evil – (Proverbs 16:6)
- The “fear of the Lord” leads to a satisfying life, and spares one from much evil – (Proverbs 19:23)
- The “fear of the Lord” is the way to riches, honor, and life – (Proverbs 22:4)
Today, may you and I fear the Lord like we are suppose to. May we keep our tongues from evil, and our lips from speaking deceit. And may we depart from evil and do good; Seek peace and pursue it.
