(Psalm 95:6-7)…..“Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker: For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of His hand.” We find in this verse the correct object of our worship (the LORD). We find in this verse the correct attitude of worship (bowing ourselves before God). We find in these verses the foundation for the correct action in worship (hearing His voice). Webster defines “worship” as “courtesy or reverence to worth, honor, respect, or an act of paying divine honors to a deity, religious reverence or homage. The word “worship” is translated from several different Greek words, three of which are used more than once in the Scriptures.
- PROSKUNEO – this word occurs 60 times in the New Testament as is always rendered worship – used in – (John 4:24) – means – “to kiss the hand to (towards) one – in token of reverence – to fall upon the knees and touch the ground with the forehead as an expression of profound reverence”
- SEBOMAI – this word occurs 10 times in the New Testament – means – to stand in awe; to venerate – to reverence – to worship – to adore”
- LATREUO – this word occurs 21 times in the New Testament – translated 17 times as service and 4 times as worship – means – to render religious service of homage – to worship God in the observance of rites instituted for worship”
From these word studies it is clear that true worship entails participation. We must be participants, not just be spectators, because In true worship we are not the audience, God is! Think about worshipping the LORD today, and enjoy it!
