“While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ Then he fell on his knees and cried out, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them.’ When he had said this, he fell asleep.” (Acts 7:54-59)
Filled with the Holy Spirit, Stephen stood firm in his faith even as he faced hostility. His courage and steadfastness in proclaiming the truth remind us that our faith may sometimes lead us into difficult situations, yet it is in these very moments that our faith can shine the brightest. As Stephen faced his accusers, he was granted a vision of Jesus standing at the right hand of God. This glimpse of glory gave him strength and affirmed the reality of his faith, even as he approached death. Echoing the words of Jesus on the cross, Stephen’s prayer for his executioners exemplifies the Christian commitment to forgiveness. In asking God to forgive those stoning him, Stephen displayed a heart free from bitterness, embodying the grace and compassion of Christ. What would our prayer look like? Maybe it would sound something like this.
Lord, as I reflect on Stephen’s martyrdom, I am moved by his faithfulness and courage. In the face of death, he remained steadfast, looking to You and echoing the love and forgiveness of Christ. Strengthen my faith that I might stand firm in trials and opposition. Fill me with Your Spirit so that I might face challenges with grace, courage, and unwavering trust in You. Teach me to forgive as Stephen did, to release bitterness, and to embrace Your way of love and mercy. Even in the most challenging times, help me find strength in Your presence and the hope of Your glory. Thank you for Stephen’s example, a reminder of the cost and the strength of true discipleship. Please help me to live with such faith and conviction. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
In trials, may his example remind you of the strength available through Christ, who gives us the ability to endure and forgive, even in the most challenging circumstances. Amen.
