(Psalm 5:4-12)…..For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, Nor shall evil dwell with You. The boastful shall not stand in Your sight; You hate all workers of iniquity. You shall destroy those who speak falsehood; The Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man. But as for me, I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy; In fear of You I will worship toward Your holy temple. Lead me, O Lord, in Your righteousness because of my enemies; Make Your way straight before my face. For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; Their inward part is destruction; Their throat is an open tomb; They flatter with their tongue. Pronounce them guilty, O God! Let them fall by their own counsels; Cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions, For they have rebelled against You. But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Let those also who love Your name Be joyful in You. For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; With favor You will surround him as with a shield.
Wickedness (sin) is running at full speed ahead in our culture, even in the lives of many who profess to have a Christian walk in Jesus Christ. This is not a surprise, because the Lord has told us this would happen (Matthew 24:3-14) (1 Timothy 4:1-2). Yet many (all of us at one time or other) treat wickedness as if it is no big deal. We’ll watch it, listen to it, compromise with it, and if not in continual fellowship with the Lord in the Scriptures and prayer, we will fall into it. But God does not take pleasure in any form of wickedness, and evil does not dwell with Him.
(Leviticus 19:1-2)….And the LORD spoke to Moses saying, “Speak to all the Congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.
Our actions matter before a God a Holy God. As David drew closer to God he became more aware of God’s holiness and man’s sinfulness. If we are drawing close to God we will become increasingly sensitive to sin since the God we are approaching is a holy God
What Does God Hate – (5:4-6)
The boaster (foolish – KJV) will not stand in the presence of such a Holy God. What is a boaster? The word means to shine or to glory, a boaster is one who makes a show, one who glories in himself, and one who boasts in his own strength. He is one boasts of his own righteousness even in His own work as the one responsible for his own achievements, maybe even to the point of crediting himself for his salvation. True Christians are ones who boast in or glory in the cross of Christ (Galatians 6:14). This is a subject that is sure to rouse anger among most professing Christians. But it is an awesome and sobering truth that God hates certain people. God hates all workers of iniquity (Psalm 5:5). The word translated (iniquity) means evil, wickedness, nothingness, vanity, etc. So God hates the workers (those who practice) wickedness, evil, and worthless deeds. How many times have we said (or heard) “God loves the sinner, but He hates the sin?”
But notice, does it say, “You hate all iniquity?” No, it doesn’t say that, although that is true. It says, “You hate all WORKERS of iniquity.” Who or what are WORKERS? Are they emotions? Are they concepts? No – these WORKERS are people. God hates people who work (practice) iniquity (Psalm 11:5). Wicked man has a problem. God is going to destroy him. Those who speak falsehood, the bloody (bloodthirsty), the deceitful, God abhor’s (to loath or detest) and He will destroy them (Psalm 55:23) (Psalm 34:11-16) (Psalm 37:1-2) (Psalm 5:9-10)…There is no faithfulness in their mouth. This sounds much like – (Romans 3:10-18). Now notice David’s thoughts of those who practice wickedness. Let them fall by their own counsels, David prays that the wicked will come to their deserved end. Is there such a zeal for righteousness in us when we see wickedness around us? We ought to be merciful, loving, compassionate, forgiving, but never as a cover for tolerating wickedness.
